History:
The Raupenschlepper Ost (RSO), or “Caterpillar Tractor East,” was developed by Steyr during World War II to cope with the challenging terrain and weather conditions of the Eastern Front. Introduced in 1942, the RSO was a fully tracked, lightweight prime mover designed to haul artillery and supplies across snow, mud and rough terrain where wheeled vehicles failed. The RSO/01 model, featuring a pressed steel cab, became the most widely produced variant. This particular version with a wooden shelter represents field-modified RSOs used for command posts, radio units, or crew shelters, offering protection against the harsh Russian winters. Its utilitarian design and rugged build made it a backbone of logistics operations in the East.
