History:
The Breguet Atlantic 1 was developed in the 1960s as a long-range maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft. Operated by NATO members including France, Germany, and Italy, it was designed to detect and track submarines while carrying torpedoes and depth charges in its internal weapons bay. The Italian Navy used the Atlantic for nearly half a century, with aircraft of the 41° Stormo based at Sigonella becoming a familiar sight in the Mediterranean. One aircraft in particular gained fame for its striking special paint scheme: a giant eagle spanning the fuselage, symbolising the unit’s heritage. Phased out in the early 2010s, the Atlantic 1 left behind a distinguished legacy in maritime aviation.
