History:
The Douglas C-54 Skymaster was a four-engine transport aircraft used extensively during and after the Second World War. By the 1950s, the U.S. Air Force’s Thunderbirds aerobatic team adopted a C-54D to serve as their support aircraft, transporting mechanics, ground crew, and essential spare parts across the globe. Painted in the team’s distinctive livery, it ensured the Thunderbirds could perform at airshows far from their home base. The Skymaster itself played a vital role in post-war military logistics, notably during the Berlin Airlift, and the Thunderbirds’ use of the C-54 highlighted its reliability and enduring value. Today, it remains a celebrated piece of aviation history, both for its wartime service and its place in the story of the USAF’s premier demonstration team.
