History:
The Challenger 1’s development stemmed from the cancelled Shir-2 project originally intended for Iran. After the 1979 revolution, the British Army refined the design for its own use, resulting in a tank that first entered service in 1983. Its standout feature was Chobham armour, which provided superior protection against modern anti-tank weapons. Armed with the L11A5 120mm rifled gun and powered by a Rolls-Royce CV12 diesel engine producing 1,200 horsepower, the Challenger 1 combined firepower and mobility effectively. The tank gained international recognition during Operation Granby in 1991, when it achieved the longest confirmed tank kill in history at over 5,000 metres. Despite reliability and fire-control issues compared to contemporary Western designs, the Challenger 1 laid the groundwork for the more advanced Challenger 2. Phased out in the early 2000s, it remains a significant step in British armoured vehicle development and a proven combat vehicle of its time.
