History:
The BR 18 505 began its service as part of the Bavarian S 3/6 series, built by Maffei in 1925. With its four-cylinder compound steam engine and Pacific wheel arrangement, it quickly established itself as one of Europe’s premier express locomotives. Renumbered as BR 18 505 under the Deutsche Reichsbahn, it achieved speeds exceeding 120 km/h, a remarkable feat for its era. Modernised in the 1950s with smoke deflectors and a streamlined cab, it became a symbol of German steam elegance during its final years of service. Retired in 1961, the locomotive was preserved and now stands proudly in the DB Museum in Nuremberg, representing the pinnacle of German steam design and the golden era of railway travel.
