History:
The Panavia Tornado IDS/GR.1 was a product of international collaboration through the MRCA program, involving British Aerospace, MBB, and Aeritalia. Entering service in the early 1980s, it became a versatile multirole aircraft, capable of deep strike, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare. Its RAF designation, GR.1, saw combat debut during Operation Granby in the 1991 Gulf War, flying perilous low-altitude bombing missions. Equipped with two Turbo-Union RB199 turbofans, it carried a wide array of weapons, including precision-guided bombs and tactical nuclear options. The Tornado’s adaptability ensured decades of service, from the Gulf War to operations in the Balkans, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Although retired from RAF service in 2019, the Tornado remains a landmark achievement in joint aircraft design and a proven force in modern air warfare.
