History:
The Ilyushin Il-2 Stormovik was developed as a dedicated ground-attack aircraft and entered service with the Soviet Air Forces in 1942. Designed with extensive armour protection for both the pilot and engine, the Il-2 earned the nickname “flying tank” and proved devastating against German armoured formations. Armed with bombs, cannons, and rockets, it became a key weapon in Soviet offensive operations. With over 36,000 built, the Il-2 remains one of the most produced military aircraft of all time. Its effectiveness and contribution to the Eastern Front made it one of the most important aircraft of the Second World War, symbolising Soviet air power and resilience.
