History
The M1 Abrams has formed the backbone of U.S. armoured forces since the 1980s. With the rise of asymmetric urban warfare, the Tank Urban Survival Kit (TUSK) was developed to improve crew protection and combat effectiveness in close quarters. TUSK I introduced reactive armour, remote weapon stations and slat armour, while TUSK II added more modular armour panels and enhanced sensors. These modifications were rapidly deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, where the threat of IEDs, RPGs and ambush tactics demanded additional protection. The M1A1 and M1A2 variants equipped with TUSK packages demonstrated the adaptability of the Abrams platform in modern combat environments.
