This 1/35 scale kit from Dragon Models faithfully recreates the German Sd.Kfz.251/23 Ausf.D Reconnaissance Vehicle, a late-war variant of the famous half-track series. Outfitted with a 2cm KwK 38 cannon in a fully enclosed turret, this vehicle was adapted for frontline reconnaissance and fire support. The Ausf.D configuration, introduced in 1943, featured simplified production features while retaining combat effectiveness, making it a versatile asset for Panzer divisions and armoured reconnaissance units.
The kit includes highly detailed injection-moulded parts, featuring Dragon’s trademark slide-moulding technology to reproduce fine details such as armour panels, engine grilles, and weapons. Clear parts for vision blocks and periscopes are included, along with photo-etched metal components to enhance the realism of the vehicle’s external fittings. The model also comes with detailed road wheels, individual track links, and internal stowage bins. A single set of waterslide decals is provided, representing a historically accurate vehicle from late 1944.

History:
The Sd.Kfz.251 series served as the backbone of German mechanised infantry forces throughout World War II. The Ausf.D variant was introduced in 1943 as a streamlined version intended to simplify wartime production. The Sd.Kfz.251/23 was a rare late-war development that replaced the usual machine gun armament with a turret-mounted 2cm KwK 38 cannon, previously used in light armoured cars. This transformation aimed to bolster reconnaissance units with enhanced firepower while maintaining mobility. Used primarily on the Western and Eastern fronts during 1944–45, the Sd.Kfz.251/23 was produced in limited numbers but represented Germany’s effort to adapt existing platforms to evolving battlefield needs.
