History
The Austin Tilly utility car originated from a pre-war British War Office requirement for a light military vehicle based on a standard civilian chassis. The name “Tilly” derived from ‘Utility,’ and it was produced by several manufacturers, with the Austin variant among the most common. Designed with a strengthened frame, military wheels, and a simple rear cargo bed covered by canvas, it served in roles ranging from staff transport to supply delivery. Tillys were deployed in almost every theatre of war, from the UK to North Africa, Europe, and the Far East.
