The Bismarck was the pride of the German Kriegsmarine during World War II, launched in 1939 and commissioned in 1940. At over 250 metres in length and armed with eight 38cm guns, she was one of the most powerful battleships of her era. In May 1941, the Bismarck famously engaged and sank HMS Hood in the Battle of the Denmark Strait, before being hunted down by the Royal Navy and sunk after a dramatic chase in the Atlantic.
