History
The Achilles was Britain’s answer to increasingly well-armoured German tanks encountered in the latter years of WWII. Based on the U.S. M10 tank destroyer, the Achilles was upgraded with a high-velocity 17-pounder anti-tank gun, significantly enhancing its lethality. The majority of conversions were of the IIC variant, recognisable by its turret counterweight and sloped hull. Over 1,000 were completed and used extensively following the Normandy landings in 1944, playing key roles in Italy and across Northwest Europe. The Achilles gave British and Commonwealth troops a much-needed edge in tank destroyer capabilities, especially against formidable threats like the Panther and Tiger tanks.
