German Tank Destroyer Elefant (1/35) 35325
The Elefant was one of the most heavily armoured and powerfully armed tank destroyers of WWII. Originally developed from Porsche’s unsuccessful Tiger tank design, 90 units were produced under the designation Ferdinand and first saw combat during the Battle of Kursk in 1943. Equipped with the formidable 88mm PaK 43 L/71 gun, the vehicle could engage enemy armour at long distances with devastating effect. However, a lack of close defence weapons and mechanical unreliability led to heavy losses.
In 1944, 50 surviving units were retrofitted with key upgrades, including a hull-mounted machine gun, a commander’s cupola, and improved armour, and re-entered service under the name Elefant. These improved vehicles saw continued action on both the Russian and Italian fronts, and a few remained operational until the final days of the war in Berlin.
