History
Originally sketched in a New York hotel in 1940, the P-51 Mustang became one of WWII’s premier fighters. The P-51D introduced the iconic bubble canopy and more firepower with six .50 calibre machine guns. By the war’s end, the Mustang was in service across the globe.
As jet fighters emerged, many Mustangs were relegated to storage, but the outbreak of the Korean War gave the aircraft a new lease on life. Re-designated as the F-51D, its low-speed manoeuvrability made it ideal for ground attack missions alongside Forward Air Controllers. However, its liquid-cooled engine was vulnerable to small-arms fire, and the F-51 suffered significant losses in Korea—194 aircraft lost in three years, most from ground fire. Despite this, the Mustang remained a reliable workhorse during the early Cold War period.
