Tamiya Plastic Model Kit
Tamiya Douglas F4D-1 Skyray (1/72)
This detailed 1/72 scale model from Tamiya accurately recreates the sleek Douglas F4D-1 Skyray, the U.S. Navy’s only operational delta-winged interceptor. This kit features crisp panel lines, a well-rendered cockpit, and fine surface detailing that make it an ideal addition to any Cold War aircraft collection.
The compact airframe, sharply swept delta wings, and fuselage contours are replicated with precision. Builders will appreciate the straightforward assembly and historically faithful proportions. The aircraft’s unique landing gear configuration and undercarriage are also authentically represented. While decals are included to mark the prototype, modellers can optionally source decals to represent production aircraft for added realism.

History
The Douglas F4D-1 Skyray emerged in the early 1950s as a direct result of post-WWII aeronautical research, particularly that of German engineer Dr. Alexander Lippisch. Incorporating a delta-wing design, the Skyray became the only delta-wing interceptor to serve with the U.S. Navy. Designed for rapid climb and high-altitude interception, the aircraft achieved impressive performance benchmarks, including a world speed record of 1,211 km/h in 1953. Although it never saw combat, the Skyray played a vital role during Cold War alert missions, especially in East Asia during periods of tension in the 1950s. Its production variant entered squadron service in 1956, contributing significantly to the evolution of carrier-based jet interceptors.
