The F-51D Mustang was the Korean War service designation for the iconic P-51D, one of the most successful fighters of World War II. Originally designed in April 1940 and famed for its speed, range, and agility, the Mustang’s proven performance made it invaluable even in the early jet age. Retained in service for ground attack duties, it offered capabilities that complemented the new jet fighters of the period.

Following World War II, Mustangs served with numerous air forces worldwide. When the Korean War began, hundreds of F-51Ds were in storage in Japan awaiting scrapping. Their low-speed manoeuvrability and long range made them well suited for close air support missions alongside Forward Air Controllers. However, their liquid-cooled engines were vulnerable to ground fire, resulting in high loss rates during the conflict. Despite these risks, the Mustang remained a trusted workhorse throughout the war, bridging the gap between WWII-era piston fighters and the emerging generation of jet aircraft.
