History
The Renault R35 was developed in the 1930s as a replacement for older WWI-era tanks in the French Army. Prioritising crew protection and simplicity, it featured thick cast armour but a relatively underpowered 37mm gun, making it suitable for infantry support rather than tank duels. Over 1,500 units were built and saw action during the German invasion of France in 1940. Although many were lost or captured, the R35 continued service with other nations, including Romania and the German Wehrmacht. Its early war presence and widespread use make it an important subject for modellers interested in pre-1941 European armour.
