The Focke Wulf FW190 D-9 represented a major development in the German Luftwaffe’s fighter capabilities during the latter part of World War II. Evolving from the successful FW190A series, the D-9 variant was designed to excel at higher altitudes, pairing the proven FW190 airframe with the powerful, liquid-cooled 1,750hp Junkers Jumo 213 engine.

Entering production in June 1944, the FW190 D-9 offered improved high-altitude performance, a longer fuselage, and aerodynamic refinements over earlier models. It first saw combat in September 1944 with III/JG 54, providing top cover for the new Me262 jet fighters in the skies over Germany. Known for its speed, climb rate, and heavy armament, the D-9 proved a formidable opponent for Allied aircraft during the closing stages of the war.
