History
The Brummbär (German for ‘Grizzly Bear’) was developed as an infantry support vehicle, mounting a 150mm StuH 43 L/12 howitzer within a heavily armoured superstructure. First deployed in 1943, it proved effective in urban combat and against fortified positions. The late production variant, built from 1944 onwards, used the Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf.J chassis and incorporated design changes such as a revised gun mantlet and hull machine gun position. These vehicles were deployed in Sturmpanzer battalions and saw service on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, including actions in Hungary and Czechoslovakia as Germany’s military situation deteriorated.
