History
The German infantryman of 1940 was the backbone of the Wehrmacht’s Blitzkrieg strategy, combining speed, coordination, and aggressive tactics. During the invasion of France, German troops advanced rapidly through the Ardennes, bypassing heavily fortified areas and encircling Allied forces. The M36 uniform and distinctive Stahlhelm helmet became symbols of this period, while the standard-issue Kar98k rifle, MP40 submachine gun, and MG34 machine gun provided the firepower to support fast-moving operations. The success of the infantry in France cemented Germany’s tactical reputation in the early years of the war.
