History
The Wespe (meaning “Wasp” in German) was a self-propelled howitzer built on the chassis of the Panzer II light tank. It replaced the original turret with a fixed superstructure housing a 105mm leFH 18/2 L/28 howitzer. Despite its light armour and relatively thin construction, the Wespe was well-regarded by its crews for its mobility and firepower, making it a valuable asset for supporting infantry advances. Deployed in various theatres, including the Eastern and Western Fronts, it also saw service in Italy. The vehicle’s success ensured its continued production well into 1944, making it a key component of German artillery support throughout the war.
