History
The Hummel, meaning “bumblebee” in German, was developed in response to the Wehrmacht’s need for mobile artillery capable of keeping up with armoured formations. Armed with a 15cm sFH 18/1 L/30 howitzer and mounted on a modified Panzer III/IV chassis, it offered a potent blend of firepower and mobility. Introduced in 1943, the Hummel made its combat debut on the Eastern Front and was later used in Italy and Northwest Europe. Despite its open-top design offering limited crew protection, the Hummel proved to be a reliable and effective platform for indirect fire support throughout the later stages of WWII.
