Tamiya Ilyushin IL-2 Shturmovik (1/72)
The Ilyushin IL-2 Shturmovik was the Soviet Union’s premier ground-attack aircraft during the Second World War, feared by German forces and revered by Soviet troops. Produced in staggering numbers, with over 36,000 built, it remains the most manufactured military aircraft in history. Designed with integral armour plating to protect vital areas such as the cockpit, engine, and fuel tanks, the IL-2 could endure significant battle damage while continuing its mission.
Initially introduced as a single-seat aircraft in 1941, the IL-2 suffered heavy losses, leading to the development of a two-seat version featuring a rear gunner for added defensive capability. In late 1943, a refined variant with outer wing panels swept back at 15 degrees improved stability and balance. Armed with cannons, machine guns, and rockets, the IL-2 played a decisive role in close air support missions, particularly during the Soviet push from Stalingrad to Berlin.

History
Nicknamed the “Flying Tank” by Soviet soldiers, the IL-2 was an essential tool in the Red Army’s combined-arms operations. From its debut in 1941, it provided relentless low-level attacks against enemy armour, artillery, and troop concentrations. Its combination of armour protection, heavy armament, and rugged construction allowed it to survive missions that would have been fatal for other aircraft. Operating alongside the legendary T-34 tank, the IL-2 became a symbol of Soviet resistance and a key factor in turning the tide on the Eastern Front. By war’s end, its contribution to the Soviet victory was beyond measure.
