History
The Japanese Ground Self Defense Force deployed to Iraq in the early 2000s as part of a humanitarian and reconstruction mission. Operating primarily in the southern region, the units focused on rebuilding infrastructure, supplying clean water, and providing medical aid, while maintaining security in cooperation with coalition forces. This mission marked one of the most significant overseas deployments of the JGSDF since its post-war formation, requiring troops to adapt to challenging desert conditions and potential security threats. The deployment also showcased Japan’s modern military equipment, including the Light Armored Vehicle and advanced infantry weaponry.
