History
The M551 Sheridan entered service in 1968 during the height of the Vietnam War. It was designed to provide lightweight, air-transportable fire support for airborne and reconnaissance forces. Despite some teething issues, it proved valuable in the dense terrain of Southeast Asia where its mobility and firepower were well suited to jungle warfare. The Sheridan’s 152mm gun could fire both high-explosive rounds and guided missiles, giving it versatility in both anti-infantry and anti-armour roles. It remained in active service until 1996, including use in Operation Just Cause and Desert Storm. Its unique profile and role in multiple conflicts make it an iconic vehicle in U.S. armoured history.
