History
The Matilda Mk.III/V infantry tank was a core component of British armoured forces early in WWII, valued for its heavy armour and reliability. While phased out in favour of newer British designs like the Valentine, over 1,000 Matildas were sent to the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease Act. The Red Army deployed them primarily on the Eastern Front, particularly during the harsh fighting of 1941–1942. Soviet modifications adapted the tank for colder climates and different terrain, and it proved a dependable vehicle despite its limited speed and relatively small 2-pounder main gun. These Matildas helped bolster Soviet armoured divisions during a critical period of resistance against the advancing German forces.
