History
The A12 Matilda, introduced in 1936, was designed to accompany infantry in battle, sacrificing speed for protection and firepower. With armour up to 60mm thick and a 2-pounder main gun, it was virtually impervious to Italian weaponry during the early North African battles, earning a fearsome reputation. Its slow top speed of 24km/h matched infantry advances, while its reliability and survivability made it a valued asset in British and Commonwealth units. The Matilda served in various theatres, including with Soviet and Australian forces via the Lend-Lease programme. However, by mid-war, advances in Axis anti-tank weaponry, notably the German 88mm gun, began to outclass its protection.
