History
The North American P-51D Mustang is widely regarded as one of the most successful fighter aircraft of WWII. Introduced in 1944, the D variant featured a bubble canopy for improved visibility and six .50 calibre machine guns. Powered by a Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the P-51D combined high speed, long range, and exceptional manoeuvrability.
Used extensively by the United States Army Air Forces, the Mustang provided vital escort for Allied bombers over Europe and later played a ground-attack role in the Pacific. Its performance and reliability earned it a legendary status, and it continued to serve in various air forces around the world for years after the war.
