Tamiya Plastic Model Kit
Tamiya P-47 Thunderbolt Bubbletop (1/72)
The Republic P-47D Thunderbolt “Bubbletop” was the evolution of one of World War II’s most formidable fighters. Equipped with a transparent bubble canopy to improve all-round visibility, it was equally effective in high-altitude bomber escort and low-level ground attack roles. Powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 turbo-supercharged engine, the P-47D could reach high altitudes with ease while delivering devastating firepower from its eight .50 calibre machine guns.
This 1/72 scale Tamiya kit faithfully reproduces the later Bubbletop variant with precise panel lines, accurate canopy shape, and a robust fuselage profile. Designed with all-new parts from the earlier Razorback release, it includes ordnance options such as 500lb bombs and M10 rocket launchers for maximum display versatility. Marking options cover two aircraft, including one from the 8th Air Force’s 78th Fighter Group.

History
Introduced in 1944, the P-47D Bubbletop addressed visibility issues found in earlier “Razorback” models, giving pilots a much clearer field of view during combat. The Thunderbolt’s rugged airframe and powerful engine allowed it to carry heavy loads of bombs and rockets while enduring significant battle damage. It served extensively in both European and Pacific theatres, excelling as an escort fighter, interceptor, and close air support platform. The aircraft’s combination of speed, firepower, and resilience earned it a lasting place among the most respected fighters of the Second World War.
