History
The P-47D was developed as a high-altitude escort fighter and ground-attack aircraft for the US Army Air Forces. With its powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine and turbo-supercharger, it excelled at altitude, matching bomber formations deep into enemy territory. Its rugged design and eight .50 calibre machine guns made it devastating in ground-attack roles, especially when fitted with bombs and rockets.
The early “Razorback” version of the P-47D saw action in both European and Pacific theatres. It earned a reputation for durability, often returning home with heavy battle damage that would have grounded other aircraft. Its contribution to the success of Allied bombing campaigns and close support missions was immense, making it one of the most respected fighters of the war.
