History:
Entering service in the latter stages of WWII, the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XVIe retained the outstanding agility of its predecessors while incorporating advancements suited to late-war combat. It was equipped with a bubble canopy for better visibility, a revised “E” wing configuration for mixed cannon and machine gun armament, and a Merlin engine manufactured in the USA. The Mk.XVIe saw service in ground-attack and low-level interception roles, contributing to the RAF’s efforts across the European theatre in 1944 and 1945.
