History
The M10 tank destroyer was developed in response to the increasing threat posed by German armoured forces. Entering service in 1942, it combined the mobility of the Sherman chassis with a turret-mounted 76.2mm gun designed to outmatch enemy tanks. The mid-production M10s introduced refinements such as improved turret counterweights and armour enhancements. Despite its open fighting compartment exposing crews to small arms and shrapnel, the M10 was a valued asset across European and North African theatres. It proved especially effective in ambush tactics and combined arms engagements. Over 6,400 M10s were built, with many serving Allied nations through Lend-Lease agreements, particularly the UK and Free French forces.
