History:
HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08) is the first of the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers and represents a new era of naval power for the Royal Navy. Officially commissioned in 2017, she serves as the fleet flagship and is designed to carry up to 40 aircraft, including the advanced F-35B Lightning II stealth fighters. Her twin-island design separates ship control from air operations, increasing operational efficiency and survivability.
Constructed by a consortium of British shipbuilding companies, including BAE Systems and Babcock, HMS Queen Elizabeth was assembled at Rosyth Dockyard in Scotland. At over 280 metres in length and with a displacement exceeding 65,000 tonnes, she is the largest vessel ever built for the Royal Navy. The ship’s missions range from power projection and disaster relief to combat operations and strategic deterrence. Her 2019 maiden deployment included extensive trials with the F-35B, establishing her role at the centre of the UK’s Carrier Strike Group.
