History:
Flank companies formed the elite wings of British line battalions during the Napoleonic Wars. Grenadier companies were composed of the strongest and most experienced men, while light companies were trained for skirmishing and operating in difficult terrain. In the Peninsular War (1808–1814), these troops played a vital role in the British Army’s success under the Duke of Wellington, often leading assaults or forming a screen ahead of the main force. Their distinctive uniforms—stovepipe shakos and shoulder wings—set them apart on the battlefield and in historical records. This set captures the spirit and appearance of these elite soldiers during one of Britain’s most celebrated military campaigns.
