History:
The Early Imperial Roman cavalry was drawn from auxiliary units, providing vital mobility to Rome’s otherwise infantry-heavy legions. These horsemen often served as scouts, skirmishers, and flanking units during key engagements. Recruited from across the empire—including regions like Gaul, Thrace, and Hispania—they brought varied fighting styles and equipment to the Roman military machine. Their battlefield flexibility, coupled with Roman organisation, allowed the cavalry to support campaigns from Britain to the Near East. The use of scale and mail armour, along with javelins and the short gladius, reflected the balance between protection and agility that characterised Roman auxiliary tactics.
