History:
The Old Guard Grenadiers were the most celebrated unit of Napoleon’s Imperial Guard—hand-picked veterans known for their loyalty, experience, and formidable presence on the battlefield. Nicknamed “Les Grognards” or “The Grumblers,” these men were the Emperor’s elite, often held in reserve until the critical moment of a battle. They wore bearskin caps and dark blue coats with red plumes and epaulettes, cutting an imposing figure. At Waterloo in 1815, they famously formed squares to cover the retreat of the French army, demonstrating the unshakable discipline for which they were known. Their legend remains a symbol of Napoleonic military excellence.
